For those who love nature, the raw beauty of Northern Norway is a true treasure.
On board the expedition ship Antigua, you’ll reach remote places that are usually out of reach. Throughout the journey you’ll be surrounded by breathtaking scenery and rare natural wonders.
In winter, this remarkable region far above the Arctic Circle reveals yet another highlight: the Northern Lights. The Aurora Borealis is one of the world’s most magical spectacles, shimmering in shades of green, purple, and blue – an experience that never disappoints.
With the Barkentine Antigua, we sail to secluded anchorages and small harbours with minimal light pollution, giving you the best possible chance to witness the Northern Lights in all their glory.

You can find the recommended packing list further down on this page.
More information
Another highlight of the Norwegian winter is the frequent presence of whales.
Drawn by the abundance of food, they make their way into the fjords. With the Antigua, we visit the best spots to observe these impressive giants of the sea – always in a respectful and nature-friendly way.

On this voyage, the magic of the Northern Lights and the thrill of whale encounters take centre stage. Light and weather conditions largely determine the itinerary: the captain sets the route according to forecasts and whale activity, ensuring the best chances for unforgettable experiences. Combined with the untouched wilderness of the Arctic Ocean, this makes for a truly unique winter adventure.

Your journey begins in Tromsø, a lively town that blends culture with nature. In the heart of winter, Tromsø shines as a beacon of warmth and light, earning its nickname “Paris of the North.”
From 6 p.m., you are welcome to embark on the Antigua. You’ll meet your fellow travellers and crew, and settle into your cabin. Depending on the weather, the ship may set sail that same evening or start its Norwegian adventure the following morning.

As October progresses, daylight hours grow shorter. We dedicate the mornings to whale watching, while the afternoons transition into a magical twilight that bathes the polar landscape in soft colours. Along the way, we may visit small fishing or reindeer-herding villages, where you’ll have time to explore on evening walks and take in the pristine Arctic scenery.

Whenever possible, the captain will hoist the sails of our stately three-masted barkentine, letting the silence of the Arctic Ocean and the majesty of fjords and mountains surround you as the Antigua glides gracefully through the water.

By Wednesday, we set course back to Tromsø, arriving in the evening. After one last night on board, you’ll share breakfast with your fellow travellers before saying farewell to the crew. Disembarkation takes place at 9:00 a.m., and from the harbour, Tromsø Airport is just a 20-minute taxi ride away.

Possible harbours and anchorages: Andfjord, Senja, Andenes, Gryllefjord, Skrolsvik, Sommarøy, Burfjord, Hamnes, Uløya, Nord-Lenangen
Please note: wind and weather may significantly influence the voyage. The route can be adjusted if required.

2. A passport, if you need it for the planned trip. Otherwise an identity card is sufficient. (Inform yourself in advance)
3. Oilskins are not necessary, but a good rainproof jacket, rain trousers and sturdy shoes are always good. Be it for hiking, cycling or helping on deck.
4. Don't forget sunglasses, a sun hat or cap and sun cream, even when the sun is not visible you can get quite burnt.
5. A good book for a bit of solitude or a good parlour game to play together with your fellow sailors.
6. A camera! So that you can capture your memories and share them with those at home.
7. Cash, because here you can only pay your drinks bill in cash. But also think about the currency of the country you are travelling to so you can buy a souvenir.

Tips

Good to know: We have two types of cabins on the Antigua: the standard cabins with bunk beds, shower and toilet and the spacious comfort cabins with separate single beds, shower and toilet. There are therefore two different cabin prices on the Antigua. Would you like to travel alone and not share a cabin? Then you can book a single supplement, which corresponds to the normal cruise price + 50%.

TIP: If you have time, it's definitely worth exploring Tromsø further. In this modest little town you will find various attractions such as an aquarium, museums and the world's northernmost botanical garden. For lovers of outdoor activities, there is also a wide range of offers. The city centre of Tromsø is only a stone's throw away from the beautiful unspoilt nature, which offers a perfect panorama for hiking. During the winter months, dog sledding excursions are also offered.
